What Is an AI Agent? The Complete Guide to Understanding, Choosing and Using One
An AI agent doesn't just answer: it plans, uses tools and takes action. Definition, how it works, real examples, risks, and how to choose the right one.

"AI agent" has become the most-used phrase in tech. Behind the hype is a real shift: we are moving from AI that answers to AI that acts. This guide explains what an agent is, how it works, what it can do today, its limits, and how to pick one.
Definition: what is an AI agent?
An AI agent is a program that receives a goal, breaks the work into steps, chooses and uses tools (web search, files, code, apps), observes the result of each action and corrects its course until the goal is reached. A chatbot tells you how to do something; an agent does it.
Chatbot, assistant, agent: the difference
- Chatbot: one question, one answer. It stays inside the conversation.
- Assistant: it answers and can use a few tools on demand (search, images).
- Agent: it chains several actions on its own toward a goal, in a "plan, act, check" loop.
How does an agent work?
- The brain: a large language model (LLM) that understands the request and reasons.
- Planning: the goal is split into sub-tasks.
- Tools: browser, terminal, spreadsheet, email, APIs… the agent decides which one to use.
- Memory: it keeps track of what has been done and of your preferences.
- Verification: it reviews its output, spots mistakes and retries when needed.
10 real-world examples of AI agents
- Turning photos of receipts into an expense spreadsheet.
- Researching, comparing and summarizing ten sources on a topic.
- Fixing a bug, running the tests and proposing the change.
- Preparing a week of social media posts.
- Sorting an inbox and drafting replies.
- Editing a short video with voice-over and subtitles.
- Running a daily watch on a market or competitor.
- Building a simple website from a description.
- Filling a spreadsheet from PDF documents.
- Planning a trip: comparing options and drafting the itinerary.
SunuXel: a versatile AI agent built in Senegal
That is exactly what we are building with SunuXel — "our intelligence" in Wolof: an agent that chats, talks, codes, uses a secure terminal, creates images and videos, and is designed from Africa for the world. A free plan is planned for everyone. SunuXel is in preparation and the waitlist is open.
Limits and risks
- Compounding errors: one wrong early step can skew the whole result. Check the output.
- Hallucinations: the agent can state false information with confidence.
- Security: never hand it passwords, and keep a human in the loop for payments and deletions.
- Privacy: know where the data you give it goes.
How to choose an AI agent
- Capabilities: text only, or also code, images, video, browsing?
- Control: can you approve important actions before they run?
- Language: does it understand your language and context well?
- Price: is there a free plan to try it?
- Privacy: what does the vendor do with your data?
